Cancer Care

Through the Alliance, we are working to expand the latest in oncology care to more patients so they can receive advanced cancer care, closer to home. Together, we are focused on several efforts, including:

  • Providing expedited access to the latest research and oncology clinical trials, and jointly developing critical new programs;
  • Deploying virtual health platforms for specialty consultations for patients, for example for genetic counseling and survivorship planning;
  • Exploring opportunities for our physicians, advance practice nurses and oncology certified nurses to participate in one another’s continuing education programs;
  • Enhancing coordination of patient care with shared tumor boards and multi-disciplinary team-based care; and
  • Launching a scalable pilot alliance between our organizations that takes advantage of the strengths of both partners to provide excellent, evidence-based patient care.

In Action in Our Communities: Expanding State-of-the-Art Cancer Care

With a 100-year history of providing compassionate care in the Lima community, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center has helped provide patients living with cancer with compassionate cancer care from diagnosis through treatment. Now, with the affiliation between Mercy Health and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute’s (OSUCCC – James) The James Cancer Network the specialized expertise of central and southern Ohio’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center will be available closer to home for those in Lima, Ohio and the surrounding areas. This affiliation means patients near Lima will have access to the sub-specialized clinical expertise at the OSUCCC – James, while remaining near to their loved ones and support systems through their cancer treatment journeys.

Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Cancer Center physicians along with the OSUCCC – James cancer specialists as part of The James Cancer Network will enhance care to patients in the area, with tele-genetic counseling services, tele-survivorship care plans, and expedited review for clinical trial eligibility.

Driving Change in Cancer Care

The OSUCCC – James is one of only 51 cancer programs in the United States designated as a National Cancer Institute (NCI) comprehensive cancer center. With more than 200 oncologists, each of whom specializes in just one type of cancer, the OSUCCC – James offers expert sub-specialization, which leads to more productive integration with cancer research and, ultimately, to better outcomes.

St. Rita’s cancer program provides integrated multidisciplinary care and is accredited by the nationally recognized Commission on Cancer. Using leading-edge technology, the team collaborates to provide evidence-based care to optimize recovery and survival rates. These outcomes will only be strengthened through the affiliation with The James Cancer Network, as the oncology program collaborates with experts at the OSUCCC – James to  enhance the cancer care of patients by increasing and strengthening services offered in the Lima community, providing streamlined continuity of care, and increasing awareness and access to clinical trials and research.

Together, we will drive the changes that are needed to create a new state of health in our community.
